Independence House to bring Nationally Acclaimed Advocate to Cape Cod for the 16th Annual Community Breakfast during Domestic Violence Awareness Month

“William Kellibrew, global advocate for human, civil, children and victims’ rights joins Independence House as Keynote Speaker for Children Who Witness Violence”

September 14, 2016, Hyannis, MA  —The 16th annual Domestic Violence Awareness Month community breakfast hosted by Independence House will be held on Friday, October 14, 2016 at the Double Tree by Hilton in Hyannis from 8:00-10:00am. This year’s focus is Children Who Witness Violence.

William Kellibrew, a global advocate for human, civil, children and victims’ rights will be the keynote speaker. William’s story is one of resiliency and hope. A Child Witness to Violence survivor from age 10 when he witnessed the murders of his mother and brother, Kellibrew’s mission is to make a difference in the lives of others with a special focus on the safety, protection and wellness of children, youth and families.  Kellibrew works closely with top leaders to address trauma, violence, abuse and neglect across multiple fields including local, state, and federal agencies, Native American reservations and communities, non-profit organizations, businesses and community leaders in order to serve individuals, families and communities. In 2011, Kellibrew was recognized by the White House as a ‘Champion of Change’, in 2013, he received the Voice Award from SAMHSA for his work across the country as a peer/consumer leader.  In 2014, he accepted the Capitol Probe Award at the District of Columbia Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, in 2015 he received the U.S. Congressional Victims’ Rights Caucus Eva Murillo Unsung Hero Award, and in 2016 he received the Ruby Campbell-Pulliam Love You More Award.

The program also includes a survivor speaker, and concluding with a candlelight ceremony in remembrance of homicide victims of intimate partner violence in Massachusetts this past year.

The annual Domestic Violence Awareness Month Community Breakfast is an Independence House signature event offered to the public to inspire actions, educate the community, support survivors and respond to the issues of domestic and sexual violence. Independence House is proud to announce Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank Charitable Foundation is the presenting sponsor for this year’s annual breakfast.

Attendance is complimentary and requires an RSVP reservation.  Invitations are extended to all community residents, business members, survivors of domestic or sexual violence, and persons interested in aligning with the Independence House mission to end domestic and sexual violence in our community.
