Independence House Receives $40,000 Grant from Cape and Islands United Way

February 1, 2013  HYANNIS, Mass.  – Independence House received a $40,000 grant from the Cape and Islands United Way on January 15th, 2013.  The grant award is part of the 2013 Cape and Island United Way Community Investment Grants.

Independence House will use funds to for the agency’s community based Housing Stabilization Program which supports victims of domestic violence who face increased risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of affordable housing, and unemployment.  The grant will provide matching funds to continue support of the program which addresses the intersection between domestic violence, economic self-sufficiency, and access to housing.

Lysetta Hurge-Putnam, Executive Director of Independence House states, “Independence House Inc. is very thankful for the funding we have received from our Cape and Islands United Way. Through this generous grant we are able to help families impacted reestablish lives free of domestic violence and fear, and increase their emotional and physical health, safety and economic independence. This funding makes a significant impact in the lives of victims and in our community”.

Independence House is one of 35 nonprofit agencies from the Cape & Islands region receiving a grant award.  Cape & Islands United Way awarded a total of $600,000 this year through their 2013 Community Investment Grant program. For more than 50 years, the Cape and Islands United Way has served as a catalyst, connecting people who care with opportunities to strengthen our community and support our neighbors in times of need.

Independence House, Inc. is a non-profit organization that in its 34thyear is the only comprehensive community-based resource on Cape Cod, providing free and confidential services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
