ADVOCATE FOR SURIVORS AND VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT

Independence House, Inc. (IH) is a comprehensive domestic & sexual violence community based agency and shelter program in Barnstable County that focuses on meeting the unique and cultural needs of survivors and their children. We provide safety, food, shelter, advocacy, counseling and other resources to assist survivors in rebuilding violence-free lives for themselves and their children. IH works closely with other agencies in the community, to provide a comprehensive network of resources for survivors of domestic and sexual violence and their children. Advocate is responsible for providing a continuum of in-person direct & digital services to children, tweens/teens & adults who have experienced domestic and sexual violence including teen dating/acquaintance violence.
RESPONSIBILITIES / SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES
- Provide comprehensive high-quality intake and assessment for adult DV & SV survivors, tween/teens and children exposed to domestic violence as well as secondary survivors.
- Provide advocacy and referral services to adults, tweens and teens served by Independence House.
- Provide short-term individual counseling to adults and tween/teens who have experienced DV or SV as well as children exposed to domestic violence either in person or utilizing a secure platform.
- Plan, develop and co-facilitate groups for children, tweens/teens and adults. Groups specific to program/funding.
- Participate in the day-to-day hotline, teen chat, MPA, and reception coverage.
- Attend team meetings specific to funding, clinical supervision, in-service training and staff meetings.
- When necessary to meet program needs, must be available for occasional work evenings, weekends and holidays
- Participate in Independence House events which can occur during the workday as well as evenings and weekends.
- Maintain accurate documentation for services provided utilizing our database system as well as other required documentation systems within the time limits stated.
- Develop and maintain relationships with other service providers for adults, tweens/teens and children.
- Outreach to school personnel and collaborate with Independence House prevention and outreach staff to inform teens about availability of digital teen services and other teen services.
- Adhere to the confidentiality requirements of Independence House as it relates to in-person services as well as adhering to the limitations and safety of digital services. The ability to clearly discuss and outline precautions taken to ensure safety.
- When working with the tween/teen program, participate in updating the social media platforms approved by Independence House.
- Conduct presentations to agencies, schools, and the community about topics related to domestic and sexual violence, teen dating violence, and children exposed to domestic violence.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bi-Lingual or Tri-Lingual preferred
- Knowledge of domestic and sexual violence as they relate to adults, children, tweens & teens especially in relation to digitally accessed services
- Strong counseling foundation and understanding of ethical standards
- Knowledge of policy & practice issues regarding domestic and sexual violence
- Conflict resolution skills
- Strong technological skills (use of internet, social media frequented by adults/tweens/teens)
- Strong group work skills
- Ability to effectively communicate with others via oral and written word and though digital means
- Knowledge of digital safety precautions and awareness of related resources for digital safety
- Ability to function as part of a team

REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Candidate must have a MSW or equivalent with a minimum of one year experience working with issues of trauma, preferably with domestic violence and sexual assault clients. Candidates with Bachelor’s degree and sufficient relevant experience may be considered.
- Knowledge of child development, teen issues and effects of domestic and sexual violence.
- Proficiency with all forms of technology including smart phone, video, chat, email and social media sites.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Completion of the IH Domestic & Sexual Violence training
- Satisfactory Criminal Background Check
- Must possess a valid MA driver’s license and proof of vehicle insurance, and have access to a vehicle during work hours
