Job Summary:

The Tri-Lingual Domestic & Sexual Violence Counselor/Advocate will provide high quality services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, children who witness violence, and secondary survivors/non-offending family/friends. These services include and are not limited to intake and assessment, individual counseling, advocacy, group counseling, and outreach. This position will provide counseling and advocacy to Spanish and Portuguese speaking survivors on Cape Cod. This position will assist with unmet needs in these communities. This position requires flexible hours (some evenings and weekends), a valid MA driver’s license and reliable transportation.

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide comprehensive high-quality intake and assessment for adult DV & SA survivors and children who witness violence.
  • Provide individual counseling to adult & child victims and witnesses at Independence House, Inc.
  • Maintain a caseload to meet needs of clients.
  • Attend and participate in mandatory team meetings and group clinical supervision.
  • Provide MPA support as needed during the workday, and some nights weekends and/or holidays.
  • Assist with hotline coverage when needed at IH which could include after-hours coverage on nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must work evenings, nights, or weekends when necessary to meet program needs.
  • Accept referrals from other agencies.
  • Develop, collaborate, and maintain relationships with other service providers serving children and adults, especially that serve the Latina population.
  • Assist in co-facilitation for support groups serving the needs of survivors.
  • Participate in outreach events to communities served in partnership with other IH staff.
  • Translate materials from English to Spanish/Portuguese consistently updating resources for the community.
  • Follow-up with potential survivors and/or provide referrals, counselling, and support.
  • Travel to site offices as needed.
  • Travel as needed throughout Cape Cod and at other work required locations.
  • Keep accurate documentation of all client services and collateral services, including maintenance of all client files and statistics.
  • Attend Independence House staff, supervision, and team meetings.
  • Submit monthly and quarterly statistics in a timely manner.
  • Work within the agency’s philosophy, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as required.

Qualifications/Skills

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree (Preferred) in Counseling/Social Work or related discipline.
  • Proficient in Brazilian Portuguese, English; proficiency in Spanish is desirable.
  • Knowledge of domestic and sexual violence as they relate to adults and children.
  • Strong counseling and technological skills.
  • Strong counseling foundation and understanding of ethical standards.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with adults and children, other Independence House staff, the public, and funders.
  • Strong commitment to victims/survivors.
  • Conflict resolution skills.
  • Must have reliable transportation and driver’s license.
  • Good organizational skills, ability to work autonomously, yet maintain cooperative involvement with team.
  • Group work experience preferred; but will train.
  • Experience and/or comfort with public speaking and community outreach.

Other Requirements

  • Completion of the IH Domestic & Sexual Violence training.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Background check.
  • Must possess a valid MA driver’s license and proof of vehicle insurance and have access to a vehicle during work hours.
  • Must obtain or maintain account with a financial institution for direct deposit of paychecks.
  • Working knowledge of community resources including housing programs.
