19th Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance @ Cultural Center of Cape Cod
Nov 20 @ 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm

The Cape Cod Transgender Day of Remembrance Committee wishes to extend an invitation to all who are transgender, gender non-conforming, individuals who are gender-fluid, and to all allies, advocates and supporters of the transgender community, to attend our Cape Cod vigil marking the 19th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

The day of remembrance began with the unsolved murder of Ms. Rita Hester, an African American transgender woman, in her Allston, Massachusetts apartment in 1998.  The “Remembering Our Dead” website project began a year later, along with the first annual day of remembrance candlelight vigil marking Ms. Hester’s death in San Francisco in 1999.

The day has now become a time for the transgender community, allies and advocates to gather, remember and honor the reported as well as the unreported victims of anti-trans hatred and violence who were murdered in the past 12 months.  In this spirit, the Transgender Day of Remembrance is now observed in over 200 cities in 21 countries around the world.

This year’s vigil will be held at The Cultural Center of Cape Cod, 307 Old Main Street, South Yarmouth, MA on Tuesday evening, November 20, 2018.  A light meal will be provided at 5:30 p.m. and the remembrance program begins at 6:15 p.m. with several guest speakers including Ruben Hopwood of the Fenway Health Transgender Health Program and Emma Croft, US Air Force veteran and transgender activist.  There will also be a reading of the names of those in the transgender community who are no longer with us.

This event is sponsored by Eastern Bank, Fenway Health, PFLAG of Cape Cod, Cape Cod Pride, Independence House, Cape Cod Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom, and First Parish Brewster Welcoming Congregation Committee.
