Transgender Day of Remembrance Event
November 17, 2017@5:30 pm - 8:00 pm
A sponsorship collaboration between Eastern Bank, Fenway Health, PFLAG of Cape Cod, Independence House, Cape Cod’s Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and the First Parish Brewster Welcoming Congregation Committee brings the:
18th Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 17, 2017.
The event’s committee extends an invitation to all who are transgender, gender non-conforming, individuals who are gender-fluid, and to all allies, advocates and supporters of the transgender community to attend.
The day of remembrance began with the unsolved murder of Ms. Rita Hester, an African American transgender woman, in her Allston, Massachusetts apartment in 1998. The “Remembering Our Dead” website project was started a year later, along with the first annual day of remembrance candlelight vigil marking Ms. Hester’s death in San Francisco in 1999.
The day has now become a time for the transgender community, allies and advocates to gather, remember and honor the reported as well as the unreported victims of anti-trans hatred and violence who were murdered in the past 12 months. In this spirit, the transgender day of remembrance is now observed in over 200 cities in 21 countries around the world.
The vigil will be held at the Harwich Community Center, 100 Oak St., Harwich, MA on Friday evening, Nov 17. A light meal will be provided beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the remembrance program begins at 6:15 p.m. with several guest speakers, followed by a reading of the names of those in the transgender community who are no longer with us.
