Independence House, in its 38th year, is a comprehensive community based domestic and sexual violence agency that responds and offers assistance to individuals and families impacted by domestic and sexual violence including children, teens, adults, the later-in-life community and their families on Cape Cod. Lysetta Hurge-Putnam, Executive Director of Independence House for the past 17 years, has led the organization’s growth to offer critical response programs and services that assist all gender identities, races, sexual orientations, abilities and cultures. The agency, which began with only a desk and a telephone in 1979 now meets the needs of survivors through offices in Hyannis, Falmouth, Orleans and Provincetown; in four Cape Cod District and Probate Court Houses; at both Cape Cod and Falmouth Hospitals; in Yarmouth and Falmouth Police Departments; and in collaboration with multiple agencies Cape-wide. Independence House also facilitates prevention curriculums in ten Cape Cod High Schools. On average, Independence House touches the lives of over 9,000 Cape Codder’s annually. Funds raised by Independence House in this benefit will be earmarked for the new Independence House emergency domestic and sexual violence shelter opening in October.
Cape Cod Synagogue, celebrating its 84th year, has sustained a dynamic culture for Jewish identity on the Cape while being a prominent organization that helps individuals and families regardless of their religious affiliation. Under the leadership of Rabbi David Freelund for the past 12 years, Cape Cod Synagogue has made significant contributions in response to important social justice issues and needs that affect all of our residents. The Synagogue has been instrumental in providing for the homeless, ailing and those experiencing hardship; continues to present a community-wide dinner on Christmas Day annually for over 30 years as well as monthly dinners to St. Joseph’s House (formerly the Noah Shelter); helps numerous families with their individual needs; and has aligned with Habitat for Humanity in helping them to build homes on Cape Cod. The Synagogue also plays a leading role in the interfaith community by taking part in, and hosting services and programs throughout the year. Funds raised by Cape Cod Synagogue in this benefit will help continue to supplement the free community educational programs the Synagogue offers throughout the year.
Major sponsors for the benefit include the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, Wendy’s, Bayside Resort, and media sponsor Cape Cod Broadcasting Media/Ocean 104.7 who will be promoting the event along with ticket giveaways.
