Programs and Services to assist survivors of domestic and sexual violence

Independence House is the only comprehensive community-based organization on Cape Cod providing free and confidential specialized services and widespread programs for children (ages 5+), teens, adults and the later-in-life community who are survivors of, or impacted by domestic or sexual violence.  All Independence House staff meet the statutory requirements of The Massachusetts General Laws (MGL Chapter 233, Sections 20J and 20K).

For over 40 years, Independence House, Inc. has been sharing knowledge and skills with survivors in order for them to regain self-confidence, make informed decisions and initiate changes in their lives in order to live empowered, independently, and free from violence.

Independence House has been a consistent and continuous leader in increasing safety options for adult and children survivors of domestic and sexual violence; increasing knowledge and awareness about domestic and sexual violence prevention;  elevating and improving Cape Cod’s response to domestic and sexual violence; and actively engaging with the community to end domestic and sexual violence.

Domestic Violence

Individual counseling, advocacy and groups for survivors, and secondary survivors of intimate partner violence.

Children Exposed to Domestic Violence

Individual counseling, advocacy and groups for children ages 5-12 who witness intimate partner violence.

Teens

Individual counseling, advocacy, education and groups for adolescents ages 13-17 affected by intimate partner violence, including sexual violence.

Prevention

Creating a culture free from intimate partner violence through primary prevention practices.

Education and Outreach

Preventing or responding to domestic and sexual violence through trainings, workshops; building knowledge about domestic and sexual violence and explaining agency services.

Homicide Survivors

Independence House offers survivor services to individuals, families, close friends, neighbors, schoolmates, or members of the community affected by any homicide including vehicular homicide.

Abuse in Later Life

Specialized services for victims of domestic and sexual violence age 50 and over.

Emergency Residence

Our 24/7/365 culturally and linguistically appropriate, inclusive and accessible emergency domestic and sexual violence residence.

Sexual Violence (Rape Crisis)

Individual counseling, advocacy and groups for survivors and secondary survivors of rape, incest, stalking, sexual harassment, molestation, childhood sexual assault, intimate partner sexual abuse.

Child Sexual Abuse

Individual counseling for children ages 5+ who have been sexually abused, including both touching and non-touching sexual activity between an adult and a minor child.

Medical Accompaniment

Support and advocacy for sexual violence survivors at both Cape Cod and Falmouth hospitals and all 15 police departments on Cape Cod.

SAFEPLAN Court Advocacy

Providing assistance and support in applying for an abuse prevention order (209A) or harassment order (258E) in probate and district courts.

Housing Stabilization

Stable housing and supportive services for families affected by domestic violence who are not in immediate crisis.

Child Care

For the convenience of our clients we provide trauma informed childcare to support survivors who are attending Independence House activities.

Legal Advocacy

The Independence House civil legal advocacy service offers free trauma informed civil legal representation, advice, and support and advocacy for domestic and sexual violence survivors.

Become an Independence House Volunteer

Independence House volunteers are special people who give care and attention to survivors and their children who are faced with the personal crisis of domestic and sexual violence.

Volunteers are screened and take part in an extensive 45-50 hour training program as well as receive regular professional development training and attend regularly scheduled meetings..

Volunteer opportunities are available in all Independence House locations and include medical and police accompaniment for sexual assault survivors, childcare while a parent is attending Independence House activities, hotline assistance, emergency residence assistance, safe-homing, fundraising and administrative assistance.  Learn more
